The Regional Master’s Program in Peace Studies – offered by the University of Basel in cooperation with the Institute for Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding and the Faculties of Political Science at the University of Belgrade, the University of Sarajevo, and the University of Zagreb – is an advanced inter-disciplinary program offering expertise in four specialized fields: peace and conflict theory, development, mediation, and security.

As a constructive approach to peacefully transform violent conflicts into cooperation, the importance of peace mediation has significantly increased over recent years. Peace mediation aims at preventing or solving violent conflicts by conducting dialogue processes and direct or shuttle mediation.
This way, peace mediators assist the different parties involved to overcome the burden of the conflict and guide them towards constructive, cooperative solutions for a peaceful and common future.
The course is both theory and practice-oriented and aims at providing students with tools, methods and concepts necessary to successfully contribute to the set up and implementation of a peace mediation process.
