The Advanced Peace Mediation Program is the result of a partnership between mediatEUr, ICP and the University of Belgrade. It aims at developing a new type of learning and offer in Peace Mediation for mid and high level professionals.

The program seeks to fulfil the following objectives:

  • to gain new insights into the development of peace mediation

This course bridges the gap between basic mediation programs and the complexity of current conflicts. With the theme “North Africa and Sahel”, the International Summer Academy and Forum 2015 offers its participants an overview of mediation and dialogue within the North Africa and Sahel region. Focusing on a geographical area is relevant in order to learn how to develop useful approaches for that specific region. It provides the participants with the possibility to discuss real cases that arise in North Africa and Sahel, and the opportunity to observe how local initiatives and the indigenous culture of peace mediation interact with initiatives from outsiders. Conflicts are often related to governance issues and, more in general, to socio-political matters. Culture plays an extremely important role impacting people’s values and visions of what the social and political system should be. The mediator needs to address culturally and socially related root causes of conflict. The idea behind this regional focus is hence to determine which mediation and dialogue approaches are efficient in that particular region, and which are less so.

As a constructive approach to peacefully transform violent conflicts into cooperation, the importance of peace mediation has significantly increased over recent years. Peace mediation aims at preventing or solving violent conflicts by conducting dialogue and negotiations. This way, peace mediators assist the different parties involved to overcome the burden of the conflict and guide them towards constructive, cooperative solutions for a peaceful and common future. The art of peace mediation requires patience and perseverance, as well as skills, knowledge, methodology and experience.

Interactive and participatory methods are particularly emphasized during the course, as they allow participants to fully practice what they learn, as well as sharing their knowledge and skills with other participants. Participants will have the opportunity to gain first-hand insights from international and local experts during the lectures. The workshops and mediation simulations will allow them to play the mediator role and thus improve their practical skills of conflict transformation. Additionally, the Summer Academy and Forum is an excellent place to increase one’s personal and professional network in the cozy atmosphere of the Caux Palace Hotel.

Why Aid Can Fuel Violence | Foreign Affairs

Why Aid Can Fuel Violence | Foreign Affairs | Conflict transformation, peacebuilding and security | Scoop.it
Yet recent evidence indicates that sending aid into conflict-affected regions can actually worsen violence in some cases. Over the past decade, our research collective, the Empirical Studies of Conflict Project (ESOC), has conducted a suite of studies in conflict zones to test this relationship. Among other countries, we studied the Philippines, a state riven by a variety of long-term conflicts in areas with limited governmental control. Our findings provide several lessons on how infusions of aid work in poorly governed spaces.

Syria Calling: Radicalisation in Central Asia | International Crisis Group | Conflict transformation, peacebuilding and security | Scoop.it
The Islamic State (IS) is attracting Central Asians to Syria and fostering new links among radicals within the region. Unless the five Central Asian governments develop a credible, coordinated counter-action plan, including improved security measures but also social, political and economic reforms, growing radicalism will eventually pose a serious threat to their stability.

Call for Nominations for Sergio Vieira de Mello Award

Call for Nominations for Sergio Vieira de Mello Award

The Sergio Vieira de Mello Foundation is extending the launch of a worldwide call for nominations for its 2015 Award till 30 April 2015. This prize rewards an individual, a group or an organisation whose original and daring initiatives have brought people in conflict in war-torn societies towards reconciliation.

Through his long career at the United Nations, Sergio Vieira de Mello, who was killed on duty with 21 other UN colleagues in a car-bomb attack against the UN building in Baghdad in 2003, worked tirelessly to support those who aimed to achieve peace in situations of conflict. He pursued his ideal from Kosovo to the African Great Lakes; from East Timor to Bosnia.

It is to perpetuate Sergio’s work that the Foundation decided to attribute an award for the unnoticed efforts made by an individual, group or organisation having done something special and unique to reconcile people and parties in conflict.

The Foundation is looking for awardees, preferably at grassroot level, who are not necessarily known but would benefit from the international recognition for their work. They could then serve as an example to others and their efforts could be duplicated elsewhere in the world.

The first Award was granted to Iraqi NGO Al-Mesalla Center for Human Resources in 2011 and the second one to South-Sudan Bishop Emeritas Paride Taban in 2013.

If you know or would want to propose an organisation, a group or and individual for this Award, please consult the following web page.

Nominations for this year’s Award should reach the SVdM Foundation by 30 April 2015 using the nomination form on the website or by email at: info@sergiovdmfoundation.org, or by post at : Sergio Vieira de Mello Foundation, 29 rue des Allobroges, 1227 Carouges, Geneva, Switzerland.
